HLTAID003 Provide First Aid
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
Specific licensing /regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

Victorian State specific requirements – Based on industry standards of the regulated education and care service authorized by ACECQA and Safe work Australia (recommended to re qualify annually)

Who should attend - Cohort
The unit applies to educators and support staff working within a community based or any education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies.
Student Support:
Trainers will communicate and ask questions during the enrolment process to ensure that gaps in LLN are noted before the delivery of the unit.
Students are encouraged to advise the trainer of any language, literacy and numeracy support needs prior to commencement of the course so that reasonable adjustments can be made to delivery and assessment.
However, this training will be specific to those working within the CHC training package or seeking employment in similar industry or solely for self-development.

Candidate enrolling to this course must be at least 18 years of age or above.

Delivery Hours:
Total 14 hours
13 hours of Pre-Course Work(Online workbook – reading material, Study Library, Videos, activity preparation kit (# Optional: Refer Support – This is by appointment only - Webinar – Video or Audio over computer )) + Classroom Training Face to Face 9 AM – 5 PM (7 hours of training and practical demonstration with student with 30 min. of lunch break)

Delivery strategy:
Power point Presentation, Demonstrations of various first aid techniques. Practical component of Performing CPR and other first aid techniques will focus on working through case scenarios using the DRSABCD technique; this will be done as individuals and in pairs.
Workbook assessment questions will be completed individually at intervals throughout the course and prompt questions for discussion by the group.
Completion of Injury Report form in small groups and then reporting back to the group.
Applying first aid procedures.
Delivery and resources:
The complete course is planned for scheduled hours with self-study mode options prior to attending the course and theoretical and practical tasks to be completed plus an assignment workload during classroom training;
Assessments and Equipment/ Resources are contextualized to those working in the community sector industry – mostly with children.
Delivery of training in a class room setting with sufficient tables and chairs
Projector for Power point presentation covering delivered material
Short video for simulation and role play
First aid for life work book
Students involvement in group activities
Demonstration of CPR and other related first aid techniques including use of AED
Possible use of on-line pre-course background reading included in study library
Performance Evidence:
The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role.
There must be evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and workplace procedures:
Followed DRSABCD in line with ARC guidelines, including:
performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface
responded appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
managed the unconscious breathing casualty
followed single rescue procedure, including the demonstration of a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
followed the prompts of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
Responded to at least one simulated first aid scenario contextualised to the candidate’s workplace/community setting, including:
demonstrated safe manual handling techniques
provided an accurate verbal or written report of the incident
Applied first aid procedures for the following:
allergic reaction
anaphylaxis
bleeding control
choking and airway obstruction
envenomation, using pressure immobilisation
fractures, sprains and strains, using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation techniques
respiratory distress, including asthma
shock
Assessment strategy:
Skills must be demonstrated working individually in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, industry-validated scenarios and simulations to assess candidates’ skills and knowledge.
Assessment resources must include:
adult and infant resuscitation manikins in line with ARC Guidelines for the purpose of assessment of CPR procedures
adrenaline auto-injector training device
AED training device
placebo bronchodilator and spacer device
roller bandages
triangular bandages
workplace First Aid kit
workplace injury, trauma and/or illness record, or other appropriate workplace incident report form for written reports
wound dressings
Simulated assessment environments must simulate the real-life working environment where these skills and knowledge would be performed, with all the relevant equipment and resources of that working environment.
Assessment Includes:
Assessment will be conducted using a range of methods including case scenarios, questioning, written assessment and practical skills demonstration, assessment strategies will be based on the principles of consistency, fairness, validity and reliability.
To gain a statement of attainment student will have to achieve competency in: Practical assessment:
· Participation in group and individual scenarios
· Demonstration of the CPR in line with ARC guidelines
· Demonstrate various first aid techniques
Written assessment:
· Workbook assessment questions
· Workbook written questions
· Injury report form
Practical demonstration will allow Trainer/Assessor to document information on individual students’ performance in the direct observation sheet and Portfolio Assessment Marking form.
EVIDENCE GATHERING TECHNIQUES:
1. Written completed Assessment & incident form (workplace injury, trauma and/or illness record, or other appropriate workplace incident report form)
2. As per ARC guidelines - performing CPR on an adult, child and Infant resuscitation manikin for at least TWO uninterrupted minutes, (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on a adult/Child resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.
This accurately must be demonstrated and must satisfy both the following points: Followed DRSABCD in line with ARC guidelines, including:
- performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
- performed at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface
